Christ Church was organized in 1796, only four years after Kentucky became a state, with the first services being held on the present site. The present building was erected in 1848 and was designed by Major Thomas Lewinski, a leading architect in central Kentucky, and built by John McMurtry. Their work in Gothic Revival style is well-known in the region and survives today in the form of a number of local churches and great houses. Christ Church became the cathedral for the Diocese of Lexington, when that diocese was formed in 1895. In the 1930's, the seat of the bishop was moved to Cathedral Domain in Lee County.
Now in its third century, after a lapse of 56 years, Christ Church is once again the Cathedral for the Diocese of Lexington. This historic church continues its tradition of outreach and service to the central Kentucky area in civic endeavors such as the establishment of the Hope Center, HIV/AIDS Care Team, Christ Community Cupboard, Christ Church Apartments, and as a center for arts and education.
More information on the history of Christ Church Cathedral may be picked up at our Welcome Center, or by calling the church at 254-4497.
