Contentious Questions and Hard Texts September 19th & 26th, October 3rd, 10th & 24th Led by The Rev. Dr. Jerry Sumney Over five weeks, we will examine the following topics about the Bible: • The Inspiration of Scripture: What claim are we making when we say the Bible is inspired? • Reading the Historical Texts of the Old Testament: What do these books (with their violence) have to say to us? • Reading the Wisdom Literature of the Old Testament: What do these books say about our world? • Reading the Gospels: How do we approach these books and what should we expect to find? • Reading Apocalyptic: What does the book of Revelation say to us?
The Book of Revelation October 17th Led by Dr. Elaine Pagels, Professor of Religion at Princeton University
Why no priest wants to preach on Trinity Sunday October 31st & November 7th Led by John Brice This class will discuss the historical, political, and theological events leading to Council of Nicaea in 325. It will then focus on the continuing struggle during the 4th century toward universal acceptance and revision of the Nicene Creed and suppression of Arian and Semi-Arian theology in favor of Trinitarian.
Worship / Music November 14th Led by Erich Balling & Dean Rutenbar Dean Rutenbar and Canon Musician Balling will discuss the relationship between music and liturgy. How worship is organized in a way that satisfies the soul and mind.

Christ and Culture Takes place in the Abbot Library, 10:00am - 10:50am These classes focus on themes in our culture providing a small group discussion format.
Listening for God Through Literature September 12th – October 10th, October 24 – November 7th Led by The Rev. Dr. Bob Horine and Carolyn Jones An introduction to the Listening for God series says “Contemporary American Literature may not be the most predictable place to listen for God, but it may well turn out to be among the most rewarding.” Each Sunday we “listen” as we watch a video and discuss a short piece by one of these writers: John Updike, Anne Tyler, Henry Louis Gates Jr., Tobias Wolff, Carol Bly, Gail Godwin, Kathleen Norris and Andre Dubus. The book for the course is available in the bookstore.
Dream Workshop Series November 14th – December 12th Led by Elizabeth Conrad Using a Haden Institute DVD series we will explore the history of dreams, biblical dreams, symbols and ways of working with your dreams.
Episcopal Families 10:00am - 10:50am These classes concern issues pertaining to families of all kinds.
Kids, Chaos and the Spiritual Life TBA Led by Elizabeth Conrad & Beth Howard We will be reviewing What Size Are God’s Shoes by Tim Schenck. We will exchange ideas and experience in groups to help everyone deepen their relationship with God, their children and other parents in our community.
